Why would a bride and groom choose a destination wedding?

When Alan and I did our first destination wedding it was for family in the Berkshire’s. The Berkshire’s is a country setting in Massachusetts. We went for the weekend. We covered the rehearsal and the wedding and we managed to have a great time with the family.

Since then we have traveled to Kaui, Arizona, and Annapolis Naval Academy to name a few.

***The reasons we learned for couplies choosing a destination wedding is because their families are spread out across the country.

A 3 Day Wedding gears everyone into having a great time. The couple doesn’t feel rushed and the guests are truly engaged.

Sometimes a destination wedding can cost less than a high end venue or a golf course or country club wedding.

Our wedding was set in St Thomas on the beach. We booked a cruise invited family and friends and planned for our day in St. Thomas. The cruise left from San Juan with the first stop being St. Thomas. We reached out to the St Thomas community and found a Justice of Peace, Flowers, Limo, and one of our guests was a professional Photographer. After the beach ceremony we headed to the Ritz Carlton for lunch before getting back on the cruise ship. Not counting the cost of the cruise our wedding cost us less than $2000.00

Our guests felt our wedding was an exotic stop on their vacation.

Many All Inclusive Hotels offer wedding packages. That way your guests are likely to enjoy themselves and stay on a few days. We recommend Anna’s Adventures for inquiring about a destination wedding. https://www.facebook.com/annasadventurestravel/?timeline_context_item_type=intro_card_work&timeline_context_item_source=1417731446&pnref=lhc

Booking the photographer for a destination has two options. Booking at the location, (this can be expensive), bring one from home. Some photographers will charge extra for travel and hotel. Do your research, many photographers are eager for destination wedding business and they may not up-charge as much as you would think.

Capturing a Romantic Elopement..

Christopher and Bethany eloped at Moonlight Beach, in Encinitas California in October of 2016.  Christopher had connected with Alan and stated he was looking for a wedding photographer to capture his ceremony.  He told Alan it was an elopement. He was surprising his future bride with the photographer.   Bethany and Christopher are both in the Coast Guard.  Christopher was stationed up in SFO and Bethany was arriving near Oceanside. They had just a few days together.

They planned their ceremony at Moonlight Beach at 2:00 with just the Justice of the Peace as their witness. The ceremony was on the bluff in a small park above the beach.

Bethany glowed with happiness and love as well as Christopher.  None of their family knew.  After they read their hearfelt vows Alan suggested we go down to the beach to take some additonal photographs.

Photography Shoot Challenges:  There was a fence on the bluff that Alan had to manuveour around. It was a very bright day without any clouds; very difficult lighting conditions.  Alan worked his magic and captured the emotion of their eleopement and some beautiful photos on the beach.

Photographers are often handed difficult lighting situations and they to make the best of it.  This is some best practices:

  1.  Use a 3 stop filter
  2. Place the couple in a location where the sun won’t cause them to squint
  3. Use a strong flash (that seems ironic with the bright light, but the flash actually takes away some shadows.
  4. Alan USED a HD Range on some of the shots to contrast the hight and low lights

Is it beneficial to take the marjority of the pictures before the ceremony?

Alan and I had the privilege of witnessing and capturing the images at the ceremony of Katrina and Adam at the beautiful Green Gables Estate venue in San Marcos, California.

Katrina is a stunning bride,  hosting a large wedding party and a well attended celebration.  The day was beautiful,  filled with warm air and light breezes.  The Green Gables Estate offered many photo opportunities which we gratefully and greedily  took full adavantage of.

During the many months of planning we discussed with the bride and groom the pros and cons of capturing the large percent of images before the wedding ceremony.  For Katrina the only thing holding her back, was the ‘First Look’ image.

Capturing that “First Look” is always an important piece of the ceremony photos. We assured our bride  we could cature that look at the pre-ceremony photo shoot.

We needed to coordinate with the best man and time it perfectly.   We were able to successfully cature that moment.  We also understood that after the look,  it is important to give the bride and groom a few monments of intimacy.  The venue offered many locations to allow our couple some private moments.

Our pre-ceremony shoot was almost two hours.  The Bride and Groom were thrilled that after their ceremony they were able to join the celebration.

Working closely together will assure a successful wedding experience for the bridal couple.DSC_0629

A succesfull shoot places a lot of responsibility on the photographers.

Making sure the bride and groom enjoy their photoshoot is key in “Capturing the Moments”.  During Naiomi and Jeremy’s wedding we made sure they felt relaxed and enjoyed their shoot.  We were short on time but still made sure to capture the emotion and the love they felt.

Beautiful Bride

When the couple have a large wedding party “Fun” is what we supply.  You can see how much fun everyone was having…the camera never lies.

This year we have photographed at several locations show in this blog.  What are some of the important things to think about?

  1. Talk to your photographer to pick out the best, Location, Location, Location.  Sechrestphotos can help you find that spot that is meaningful to you and also will provide amazing photographic memories.
  2. Alan Sechrest from Sechrestphotos suggest choosing the “golden hour” as you time of day,  The “golden hour” provides the most flattering light for romance.
  3. When photographing at the beach, we suggest cache pants for the man with a white shirt or faded jeans.  The women in a solid color such as pastels or white.  Your attire will impact your pictures.
  4. Preparing the clients for the shoot to make sure they feel comfortable.  Sechrestphotos provides a relaxed atmosphere.  We take test shots to prepare our clients.  We talk and get to know each other.  Our ‘laid back’ approach allows us to capture the real emotions and moments that our clients desire.

July 4th Wedding in San Clemente, Celebrities, Musians, Air Show, and fireworks…. WOW

When Tom booked Sechrestphotos to shoot his wedding reception in San Clemente on the 4th of July,  we hadn’t a clue of what a fabulous party we would be attending.

_DSC8591

Tom who is a writer for Disney Engineering knows lots of great musicians. We were privy to Susan Anton singing to our bride and groom and many other famous musicians going on and off the stage including Grammy Award Winner, Gordon Goodwin. There was approximately 100 guests.

Sechrestphotos was hired to capture the event. Tom is very laid back and insisted we enjoy the party, offering us drinks and dinner and wanted to make certain we had a good time. We indeed did!

Our challenges were to photograph some traditional family and friend shots but get the newly married couple with the San Clemente fireworks going off in the background. Tom and Adelajda were very busy. Adelajda’s family came from Poland and Tom was on stage playing with the various musicians.

Alan pulled it off beautifully. There was also a fly over by a small fleet of WWII military airplanes.

Fairytale Wedding in Palos Verdes..the real thing!!!!

We met Tammy and Errol last year when they interviewed Sechrestphotos to capture their wedding. Tammy was outgoing and Errol was quiet (not shy). Tammy was very clear on what her wedding vision was. She wanted a small intimate affair. She planned a Vintage Themed Wedding. Her friends offered their beautiful home in Palos Verdes which provided an unmatched backdrop with several amazing focal points.

Tammy’s friends also provided other pieces to make her wedding day a true Fairytale. The intimate crowd with her friend officiating with a meaningful ceremony, I hadn’t heard the likes of before. Another friend sang a song which filled the guests (all good friends and family)  with emotion.  The table settings were dramatic working with the vintage theme.  Beautiful  music captured the day along with night lighting creating their fairytale setting.

Our gallery from her wedding tells her story with ‘real time’, capturing the emotion and telling their story.  You can immediately see the vintage theme at this fairytale wedding.

I would recommend to any bride if you want to be ‘in the moment’ make sure you are able to let go of the details and enjoy the day like you will see “Tammy and Errol” did.

Timing is everything! Perfect proposal pictures.

As I get more experienced in photography, I learned that “light” is everything. With flashes and experience, photographers, can imitate natural light, but nothing is more satisfying than the natural light when nature is in your corner.

When Sean planned his proposal to Jessica, he requested Alan be there for sunset. Sean and Jessica are from Arizona and Carlsbad, CA was to host his proposal. The weather had been cloudy for several days and we thought it was going to be a cloudy evening. Clouds can provide nice light but hide the beautiful display a bright sun can provide.

That night the strip of beach _DSC7518_DSC7516was not crowded and nature gave way to a spectacular sky. Jessica said yes, and Sean was a very happy man. The pictures came out beautiful and the happiness and love is written clearly on their faces. Please enjoy the slide show Alan created.

Photographing a Friends Wedding….

DSC01089_DSC5477_DSC5781

When our friend Anna asked Alan to photographer her wedding and DJ, Alan immediately said yes.  Anna was having a small intimate affair at the French Estate in Orange, CA.

Alan has done a lot of weddings and has DJ;d some weddings and events but combing the two was going to be a challenge.  Of course he had me :).

Anna and Brian have been together for several years, both with kids and different histories.  You could see at the wedding how happy there were.  Brian was glowing and Anna who is always beautiful looked amazing. Their combined families toasted each other and said how much they were looking forward to being one family. Brian’s son was so moved he had tears in his eyes.

50 guests attended and the party rocked.  Together we were able to capture all of her wedding and also played the music that Anna, Brian and her guest enjoyed.  We lined danced, rock and rolled, and slowed it down as well.

What is important when you photograph a wedding is not only capturing the wedding and the parts but making sure to be ready to capture the emotional moments as well. When we tell the story through our slide show it is those emotional shots that reach out to you.
