Successful Engagement Surprise Proposal Shoots

My experience in capturing the “Surprise Proposal” has shown me several key components to have a successful shoot. We are always adding new ideas and innovation to exceed our customers expectations.

After the proposal, sharing the engagement ring!

Most surprise proposals are the man proposing to the women; although we have shot the reverse. It is most important to plan with the customers all the details. Talk about timing, location, and what can be done special for the couple.

We chose a location special to the couple and added: heart, champagne, and roses.

After the proposal we offer our couple their engagement shoot. This provides the couple with their images for them to use for “Save the Date” cards and for lasting memories.

Sami teaches Sign Language and we ended the proposal with the sign for “LOVE”.

Stunning Bride, Awesome Destination, Handsome Groom, and Beautiful Day…

Sometimes it all works out beautifully. For this couple they had the destination, The Montage Hotel in Laguna Beach, CA. The weather had rain predicted, but it graciously waited till after the ceremony and pictures. The handsome groom was totally devoted to his bride. Their love shows in their gallery.
When a photographer has all these factors present; they take as many pictures as they can for as long a they can. Please enjoy these images, Captured in the moment!

The couple enjoyed their day and each other during the photo shoot. This shows clearly in the images.

Why would a bride and groom choose a destination wedding?

When Alan and I did our first destination wedding it was for family in the Berkshire’s. The Berkshire’s is a country setting in Massachusetts. We went for the weekend. We covered the rehearsal and the wedding and we managed to have a great time with the family.

Since then we have traveled to Kaui, Arizona, and Annapolis Naval Academy to name a few.

***The reasons we learned for couplies choosing a destination wedding is because their families are spread out across the country.

A 3 Day Wedding gears everyone into having a great time. The couple doesn’t feel rushed and the guests are truly engaged.

Sometimes a destination wedding can cost less than a high end venue or a golf course or country club wedding.

Our wedding was set in St Thomas on the beach. We booked a cruise invited family and friends and planned for our day in St. Thomas. The cruise left from San Juan with the first stop being St. Thomas. We reached out to the St Thomas community and found a Justice of Peace, Flowers, Limo, and one of our guests was a professional Photographer. After the beach ceremony we headed to the Ritz Carlton for lunch before getting back on the cruise ship. Not counting the cost of the cruise our wedding cost us less than $2000.00

Our guests felt our wedding was an exotic stop on their vacation.

Many All Inclusive Hotels offer wedding packages. That way your guests are likely to enjoy themselves and stay on a few days. We recommend Anna’s Adventures for inquiring about a destination wedding. https://www.facebook.com/annasadventurestravel/?timeline_context_item_type=intro_card_work&timeline_context_item_source=1417731446&pnref=lhc

Booking the photographer for a destination has two options. Booking at the location, (this can be expensive), bring one from home. Some photographers will charge extra for travel and hotel. Do your research, many photographers are eager for destination wedding business and they may not up-charge as much as you would think.

Capturing a Romantic Elopement..

Christopher and Bethany eloped at Moonlight Beach, in Encinitas California in October of 2016.  Christopher had connected with Alan and stated he was looking for a wedding photographer to capture his ceremony.  He told Alan it was an elopement. He was surprising his future bride with the photographer.   Bethany and Christopher are both in the Coast Guard.  Christopher was stationed up in SFO and Bethany was arriving near Oceanside. They had just a few days together.

They planned their ceremony at Moonlight Beach at 2:00 with just the Justice of the Peace as their witness. The ceremony was on the bluff in a small park above the beach.

Bethany glowed with happiness and love as well as Christopher.  None of their family knew.  After they read their hearfelt vows Alan suggested we go down to the beach to take some additonal photographs.

Photography Shoot Challenges:  There was a fence on the bluff that Alan had to manuveour around. It was a very bright day without any clouds; very difficult lighting conditions.  Alan worked his magic and captured the emotion of their eleopement and some beautiful photos on the beach.

Photographers are often handed difficult lighting situations and they to make the best of it.  This is some best practices:

  1.  Use a 3 stop filter
  2. Place the couple in a location where the sun won’t cause them to squint
  3. Use a strong flash (that seems ironic with the bright light, but the flash actually takes away some shadows.
  4. Alan USED a HD Range on some of the shots to contrast the hight and low lights

Would You Enjoy a Beach Ceremony?

Weddings in the sand.  It is a pretty popular venue for couples who want to vow their love for each other in front of a breathtaking setting which can’t be outdone.  Alan and I were married on the sand 11 years ago in St. Thomas.

Our most recent wedding took us to Treasure Island Beach in Laguna Beach at the Montage Hotel & Resort for a breathtaking photo opportunity.

Madeline and Adam wanted a privte ceremonty with just a few friends on the beach.  Madline was one of those women who did’t know her own beauty.  Madeline and Adam are from Colorado and while in California wanted to have their wedding ceremony on one of California’s most beautiful beaches.

We spent a few hours with them.  They were both relaxed and clearly in love.
Alan highly recommends wedding photography on the beach.  The bride should bring flip flops and decide beforehand if she wants to get ‘wet’.  ex. “Trash the Dress”.  The time of of the ceremony should be in the ‘golden hour’.

I really enjoyed meeting Adam and Madaline such a relaxed couple who will clearly be going through life with zest and a great attitude.

Wedding Site Checks, South Orange County

When does your wedding venue require a “site check”?

DSC03983

When we have a wedding booked at a location we haven’t been before; we like to get out to the site, prior to the shoot, and identify some good photo opportunities.

Sometimes it doesn’t work out to arrive at the same time, as the future event, but you can visualize where the light will be. Sechrestphotos will always exceed the customer’s expectation and doing a thorough site check will prepare the photographer.

This Dana point site offers lots of opportunity. You must consider:

  1. How long it will take to travel from the venue to the photo opportunities you sited
  2. How much time do you have to shoot after the ceremony
  3. Who should go to the secondary location

The above pictures are preparing us for a wedding next weekend. Our bride and groom are coming from out of state to their Destination Dream Wedding in California.

We look forward to capturing the magic of their day.
